What is 10.244.0.0/16 used for?
10.244.0.0/16 is the default pod network in Flannel's manifest, and the value usually passed to kubeadm init --pod-network-cidr (kubeadm itself has no default). Each node normally receives a /24 from it, which limits the cluster to 256 nodes. Other CNIs such as Calico use different defaults.

FAQ
Why does Flannel use 10.244.0.0/16?
It is the default Network value in Flannel's kube-flannel.yml, which is why kubeadm guides pass --pod-network-cidr=10.244.0.0/16. Any free private range works if you change both.
How many nodes can a 10.244.0.0/16 pod network have?
256 with the default /24 per node, each node getting up to 254 pod IPs. Use a larger pod CIDR or a smaller per-node mask for more nodes.
