What is a /24 subnet?
A /24 subnet uses the first 24 bits of an IPv4 address for the network and leaves 8 bits for hosts. Its subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and it contains 2⁸ = 256 addresses, of which 254 can be assigned to devices. The /24 is the standard LAN size and the smallest prefix routinely accepted on the public internet via BGP. Use the subnet calculator above to check any /24 network.
/24 subnet example
For 192.168.1.0/24: network address 192.168.1.0, usable hosts 192.168.1.1 – 192.168.1.254, broadcast address 192.168.1.255, wildcard mask 0.0.0.255.

Frequently asked questions
How many usable IPs are in a /24?
254. The block has 256 addresses; the first is the network address and the last is the broadcast address.
What is the subnet mask for /24?
255.255.255.0, or 11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000 in binary.
How many /24 subnets are in a /16?
256 (2⁸), because a /24 uses 8 more network bits than a /16.
What is the difference between /24 and /23?
A /23 (255.255.254.0) is twice as large: 512 addresses and 510 usable hosts, spanning two consecutive /24 blocks such as 192.168.0.0–192.168.1.255.
